Engineering

We have an established engineering department with a good range of resources. The mechanical workshop is equipped for most engineering processes whilst the electronic labs have Microprocessor Systems, PICs, Computer-Aided-Design and circuit construction facilities.

We offer a broad range of courses both for young people wishing to gain the skills and knowledge required to become an engineer as well as those established technicians wishing to up-skill and develop their skills further.

We also offer, in conjunction with Anglia Ruskin University, a Foundation Degree Course in Engineering (FdSc Engineering).

Types of Engineering we offer

Mechanical Engineering

This largely involves working with materials such as metals polymers and composites. You will learn to use lathes, grinders and milling machines as part of your skills. However, you will also need to learn about Computer Numerical Control (CNC), Computer Aided Drawing (CAD), welding and heat treatment. You will gain an understanding of the materials and physical sciences that underpin this subject.

Electrical Engineering

This part of engineering relates to the generation, delivery and application of electrical power derived from fossil fuel and renewable sources. It can relate to many applications such as buildings, machinery, motors, installations and control systems technology. It is also an important subject to study for renewable supplies such as wind-turbines and solar energy.

Electronic Engineering

This is all round us now and drives the hardware of our computers, iPods, music systems, telephones and internet delivery. In industry it is used a lot for Control Engineering which involves robotics, sensing and automation generally. There are a large number of companies in Cambridgeshire that specialise in electronics.

Manufacturing Engineering

This is a very wide-ranging type of engineering that may involve all of the above but is focused on the production of items usually for the consumer market. In manufacturing, the process may start with an idea; go onto design, production, marketing and eventually, recycling and sustainability - the iPod is a very good example.
