Childcare students benefit from partnership with Sunflower Nursery

Childcare students had an insight into working for a busy nursery when a team from Sunflower Nursery – part of the Cambridge Housing Society – delivered a series of talks.

Kristen Dutton, nursery manager at Sunflower in Cambridge, and Gemma Bullock, group leader, gave a presentation to students about life in a nursery and described the key skills needed by employers.

The students, from Level 2 and Level 3, took part in a question and answer session at the end of the presentations.

Level 2 tutor Suzanne Clarke said the visit had been very informative and linked in well to the students’ partnership working unit.

“We have a great working partnership with Sunflower Nursery which enables the students to find out more about working life, what it’s like to be an apprentice, and what employers are looking for,” she said.

“It was great to see one of our former higher education students who is employed by the nursery featured in the presentation. Several of our students go on to work at a Sunflower Nursery or have the opportunity to do work experience there and we are very grateful for the support the partnership brings to our learners.”

Level 3 tutor Janette Sizer said: “It was a very valuable experience for my students. The presentation focused on the range of employment opportunities working for a large group and the benefits they can offer to staff. It was all key information for students who are very close to going out in the workplace. The talk also highlighted the need to be properly trained within the sector.”

Cambridge Housing Society runs two Sunflower nurseries, one in Cambridge and one in Cambourne, for children aged between six months and five years. Both are open for 52 weeks a year.

The nursery has an information morning for potential employees on 31 January. For more information, see www.chsgroup.org.uk
